a weekend in Yosemite National Park

February 24, 2011

Earlier this month hashi and I were feeling the stay-at-home weekend blues and decided it was time to get outta town for a couple of nights.  We did a quick run down of places we’ve been wanting to visit, googled some hotel room prices, checked the weather forecast and quickly settled on Yosemite as the destination of choice.  It easily met all of our criteria for a weekend away… fresh air, driving distance, cheap, and new to both of us.

Yosemite is one of the most visited National Parks which works out well for those wanting to explore in the winter.   The crowds are gone but almost all of the facilities, activities, and roads are fully functional.  We weren’t stuck in traffic winding through the mountains, there was ample parking at each little turn-off, and for the most part there was no waiting for people to get the heck out of the way during photo-ops.  Basically it’s what we like to consider absolutely perfect travel conditions!  I honestly don’t know how to describe the beautiful mountain views, snow filled valleys, and frozen waterfalls… so I’ll let the pictures do it for me.

Since we made plans an entire 5 days before leaving I had time to do a little something extra for the trip.  I rented a lens that we’ve been thinking of purchasing for our new camera.  I chose the 24-105 4.0L lens and it worked out amazing for the trip.  We were both really happy with the range it gave us as an everyday walk-around lens and upon returning home and reviewing the pictures we were very happy with the color, sharpness and clarity of the shots.  I was sad to ship the little guy back and I can’t wait to get one of our own! (*since writing this two days ago we’ve scored a great deal on the lens. yippee for us!*)

A little tradition that we have when we travel is to send a postcard home to ourselves for a little travel scrapbook I am creating.  Lucky for me there is a post office right in the middle of the park.  So, a couple days after we arrived home so did the postcard, complete with the post office’s official “yosemite” cancel across the top.  Very cool!

Yosemite is a bit of a drive for just the weekend,  but neither of us had ever been and it was just too exciting to resist seeing waterfalls & snow all at the same time!  Even though we only had one full day to explore it was totally worth the drive.  I wouldn’t be surprised if we made it back up later in the year to explore some of the roads that were closed to snow this winter.  I already can’t wait!
