impromptu “date night”

March 6, 2011

On Friday night hashi and I had grand plans of getting the apt cleaned, laundry started, and even a little studying time worked into the schedule.  Not a very exciting Friday night… but necessary for sure.  Then we found out that we needed to run a small errand for his family at the last minute and we quickly turned what should have been a simple 1 hour side trip for hashi into an impromptu date night for the two of us.  I use the term “date night” very loosly, I realize that when people read what we did with our evening it may not sound too exciting.  However, one of my favorite things in the world is when the two of us have a splendid evening doing complete randomness.  Here is a breakdown of the evening…

Step 1.  Decide that instead of cooking dinner we’ll take advantage of being near our favorite ramen restaurant (Shin Sen Gumi Hakata Ramen) before the crazy dinner rush.  Normally we try to go for lunch during the week, but honestly if you don’t time it perfectly the wait line is out the door and you’ll never have a chance of making it back to work in an hour.

Step 2.  Crave boba for dessert, but realize that we are both way too full from dinner… so detour into the Japanese market to stock up on items that I’m determined to learn how to cook with.  I love browsing through the aisles like a tourist quizing hashi on the stuff I don’t understand (aka: everything).

Step 3.  Head across the parking lot towards Tea Station to get boba and get sidetracked by a cute little bakery that neither of us had noticed before.  Attempt to just look through the window but then declare it “date night” and head inside to purchase a slice of green tea/red bean cake.  Deciding of course to save it for later because we MUST save room for boba.

Step 4.  Finally make it next door and order a chrysanthemum tea w/ boba & a milk tea (1/4 sweet) w/ boba.  Success!
