Long Beach Zombie Walk!

November 3, 2011

Last weekend our neighborhood was taken over by 1000’s of zombies… and it was pretty awesome!  There were actually two events going on during the zombie-fest on Saturday.  One was an attempt to break the world record of the largest zombie walk ever. The record is held by the city of Seattle and I believe the number was somewhere around 5,000-ish walking dead.  If it weren’t for some technical difficulties regarding counting everyone, I’m pretty sure Long Beach beat the record. Gathering number two was a massive thriller group thriller dance for MJ followers.

The zombies gathered for most of the afternoon and evening.  There were even make-up stations with professional Hollywood industry types doing zombi-fication for a small cash fee.  These artists are seriously amazing, and watching them transform a person with just a couple pots of jelly like blood, some cotton, and latex into a walking talking zombie was very impressive!

As it got later into the evening the crowds of people zombies continued to fill the streets, sidewalks, and promenade.  We couldn’t believe what a massive turnout there was.  Hands down one of the biggest events we’ve experienced since moving to downtown over a year and a half ago.  What was most surprising to me was the range of attendees.  I expected a pretty tight demographic of college age zombies, with a few younger and older for good measure. However, the mix was anything but that.  The crowds were full of families, young couples, teenagers, college kids, and plenty of empty-nester’s as well.  I suppose that made the entire thing a little more believable.  I mean, if when we have an actual zombie apocalypse they aren’t exactly going to be picky with who they take over, right?

As the evening wound down we discovered our favorite drinking hole was filled to the brim with zombies looking to get a nice refreshing beer.  Luckily for everyone it seems that most were smart enough to take public transportation home at the end of the night…
