Pacific Northwest Road Trip ~ Lassen Volcanic National Park
We just got back from a weekend trip to Yosemite this evening and I was totally inspired to wrap up this long overdue Pacific Northwest Road Trip blog! So here we are at the last stop on our trip… Lassen Volcanic National Park in Northern California.
Lassen was on the top of my list of “must see” places during this trip. Having never been to Yellowstone I knew that Lassen had similar geothermal activity (on a smaller scale) and I was really excited to check it out.
Unfortunately, much like our luck at Crater the days before the heavy spring snowfall meant the park wasn’t fully open. After the initial bummer wore off we settled into what was a fantastic ending to our two week journey. Lassen had just opened these great new camping cabins for the season and we were lucky enough to book one for a couple of nights. Since the park was mostly closed down we had plenty of time to gather fire wood, roast marshmallows, and relax the nights away. It truly was the perfect ending.
One of the coolest things that we did at Lassen was hike on a HUGE volcanic cinder cone. The hill is made up of loose gravel pieces and for every single step forward you slide about a half step back… so it was a tad bit frustrating and incredibly tiring. To top things off the heat was intense and at an elevation of 7,000+ feet we were feeling a little winded. About 1/2 way to the top I stopped to take in the view and then let myself happily jog back down to the bottom where Daniel was already waiting for me in the shade. Maybe next time we’ll be smart enough to pack sunscreen and start earlier in the day!
I can’t believe this trip ended nearly 9 months ago. We’ve since been on a South-Southwest drive (up next on the blog) and we are currently in the planning stages of the “crazy western 1/2 of the united states” three week road trip.
