south-southwest road trip ~ Chiricahua National Monument

April 30, 2012

Continuing on our south-southwest tour we headed out bright and early on one of our longest driving days of the trip… Tuscon through New Mexico all the way to El Paso, Texas. Even though we had hours of driving ahead of us we really wanted to detour to a small National Monument called Chiricahua.  Neither of us knew much of anything about it but when we both showed interest we just assumed that the other one had a reason why. Luckily our instincts saved the day and our side trip was a huge success. Chiricahua was magical.

When we planned our road trip for the holiday season the plan (and reason it’s called south-southwest) was to stay close to the border of Mexico to assure that we had sunny weather and didn’t have to deal with the possible snow & ice of northern Arizona or New Mexico.  When we arrived in Chiricahua it took us by surprise that our hike would include snow & ice.  The change of scenery was just what we needed after days of cacti!
