south south-west road trip ~ white sands national monument

August 27, 2012

I can tell I’m really far behind in blogging when we’ve booked yet another road trip and I’m trying to catch up on our travels from our winter holiday last year!  Our last major stop on our way through the south south-west was White Sands National Monument.  White Sands turned out to be an unexpected highlight during our 10 days.  We assumed it to be similar to the sand dunes we’d seen in Death Valley NP, but of course… white!  Turns out they are so much more!  The white hills go on for miles and you feel like you’ve lost yourself the most perfect sandy island (minus the ocean of course). The sand is damp and compact making it perfect for hiking since you don’t sink into it the way you do in most sand dunes.  It’s also perfect for sledding as seen in dozens of points within the park. White Sands also provided us with our favorite pictures of the trip… enjoy!
